Balance is Key

September 27, 2012

Not being an auto-mechanic, every trip to repair or maintain my car is an adventure.  Here in Monmouth County, I have experienced too many situations where I get one thing fixed only to discover something else needs repair.  Some mechanics focus on one part of the car at a time and ignore all of the other connected parts.  That often makes me the victim of “unintended consequences”.

Triad of Health

Some things, like your approach to health are not meant to be treated in a piecemeal fashion.  I focus my patients on the “triad of health”: Nutrition, Physical and Psychological.  Our body is designed to function as highly integrated unit.  “Homeostasis” means balance and the goal for everyone should be a lifestyle that illustrates choices designed around balance.

Common sense healthcare begins and ends with the integrated approach embodied in the triad of health notion.  Take, for example, the physical impacts of stress.  They can be debilitating.  Conversely, over indulgence of sugar will compromise how we feel, function and how long we live.

Health Literacy

In the game of health maintenance, knowledge is critical, hence my passion as a health literacy educator.  While driving last month, Bloomberg Radio economists were bemoaning the lack of fiscal literacy in our young adults.  I chuckled to myself when thinking about the Neanderthal state of healthcare literacy.

Consider this:  75% of all medical spend in the United States is for chronic healthcare.  Chronic health issues are primarily due to ill informed life choices and are TOTALLY PREVENTABLE!  Type II diabetes, obesity, hyper tension, chronic fatigue, stress and other chronic illness are TOTALLY PREVENTABLE!  The quality of life alone, never mind longevity are greatly improved by the knock out combination of health literacy and good choices.

Science

Proodian Healthcare and its companies are based on the principles of science.  We measure and track everything in the office while we administer educational programs based upon non-debatable literature.  I educate my patients to “own their health” just like any valuable asset.  Passivity is not an option especially since healthy choices form such an effective role in the prevention and/or management of chronic illness.

Health literacy is NOT rocket science.  Thinking you’re on a diet for a limited amount of time, “till you lose those 20 pounds”, is not only a waste of time but can be downright dangerous…..remember you DIE on a DIEt!!  Health literacy makes you health smart.  Stop treating the symptoms or waiting around for that inevitable diagnosis.  Stop depending on pharmacy solutions and fad practices.
